Suspect in deadly boating accident in Old Saybrook offered plea bargain
In a recent court session at New London Superior Court, Clayton Hackling from Lyme was presented a plea agreement after being charged with piloting a boat that caused a fatal crash, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The state's offer to Hackling includes a sentence of 30 years in prison, with half the sentence suspended after 15 years, and followed by five years of probation. The incident, which occurred on Labor Day in 2024, involved a boat driven by the defendant that collided with the outer breakwall at the entrance of the Connecticut River while reportedly speeding. Among the nine individuals on the boat, six sustained severe injuries and had to be rescued from the water by emergency personnel. Unfortunately, despite efforts, three individuals — Ryan Britagna, Ian Duchemin, and Christopher Hallahan — lost their lives. Hackling has until March 23 to decide whether to accept or reject the plea deal.
