Survivors share memories of 2010 plane crash amidst recent Air India incident.

As India faces renewed air safety concerns sparked by a recent Air India incident, memories of one of the country’s worst aviation disasters have resurfaced in Karnataka's Mangaluru. It has been 15 years since the tragic crash of Air India Express flight IX 812, a day etched into the minds of survivors and the families of the 158 individuals who lost their lives. K Pradeep, one of the eight survivors, still vividly remembers the horror of that day. Now a civil contractor in Mangaluru, he pays tribute every year on May 22 at the crash memorial, offering flowers, prayers, and reflecting on his miraculous escape. Another survivor, Usman Farooq, who now works with an ambulance service, believes divine intervention saved him as part of the fuselage broke, providing an escape route. The 2010 crash, where the aircraft overshot the runway and plunged into a gorge, remains one of India’s most devastating aviation tragedies. Investigations cited human error as the primary cause, with the captain’s compromised decision-making due to sleep inertia and infrastructure issues at the airport also contributing to the disaster.
