Strong winds to blame for 20-vehicle pileup on I-81 southbound in Oswego County

PULASKI, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- The Ringgold Fire Chief said heavy winds are most likely to blame for the 20-vehicle pileup on I-81 in Pulaski. New York State Police first said the crash involved 40 cars but have clarified that about 20 vehicles were involved in the collision while an additional 20 vehicles were undamaged but caught up in the traffic mess. The southbound lane between the Richland and Pulaski exits was closed for several hours as dozens of ambulances, tow trucks, fire trucks and police officers dealt with the mess. The highway reopened just before 7 p.m. The fire chief said it was miraculous only series injuries resulted from the crash, describing the mess as “carnage.” School buses were driven to scene to be used as warming centers for people involved in the crash. The buses and police cars were used to rescue drivers and passengers from totaled cars. Courtesy of New York State Police. This is the second pileup on I-81 in a day. Earlier, over 20 cars, also including tractor-trailers, were involved in a multi-lane crash in Watertown.
