Stricter Rules for Non-Citizen Truck Drivers Implemented After Deadly St. Lucie County Accident
The Transportation Department plans to implement stricter requirements for noncitizens applying for commercial driver's licenses following several fatal crashes involving immigrant truck drivers who were not eligible for licenses. The upcoming rules will limit eligibility to only three classes of visa holders, with states required to verify applicants' immigration status in a federal database. Licenses issued under these rules will expire in one year or upon the expiration of the applicant's visa. The department's audit was prompted by deadly incidents in Florida, Texas, and Alabama involving drivers who were in the country illegally or lacked proper qualifications for licenses. States that fail to comply with the new rules risk losing federal funding. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the need for enhanced enforcement to maintain road safety.
