Street race may have preceded fatal crash south of downtown Fort Wayne
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- Fort Wayne police are at the scene of a fatal crash on S. Clinton St. near the intersection with McKinnie Ave that may have taken place as a result of street racing. According to a press release from the Fort Wayne Police Department, dispatch got a call at 4:50 a.m. about a crash in that area. When emergency responders got to the scene they found a Chrysler 300 on fire that had crashed head-on into a box truck. Fire crews were able to put the fire out. The driver was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the box truck suffered minor injuries. Several witnesses told police the Chrysler and another vehicle were racing south on Clinton when it ran a red light at the intersection with McKinnie, crossed the center line and hit the box truck which was going north. According to police at the scene, the driver of the car ended up pinned in the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver of the truck has minor injuries. The other vehicle apparently kept going. Clinton St. is closed from E. Rudisill in the north, through the merger with Lafayette St. and south to E. Pettit Ave. Police believe the investigation will take several hours.
