Springfield woman sentenced to prison for deadly DUI crash
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) -- A Springfield woman who was facing criminal DUI charges for her role in a deadly crash that happened three years ago has been sentenced to prison. WCIA previously reported that Marina Rhone, who was 29 at the time, was charged with three counts of driving under the influence causing death. Springfield Police said that on May 1, 2023, Rhone drove into a bike lane to get around traffic and then through a red light at the intersection of Second and Cook Streets. Her car t-boned another car that was being driven by 41-year-old Kevin Crews. Crews was seriously injured and died five days later. Rhone pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated DUI in March of 2026. The other two counts were dismissed. Then on Thursday May 28 -- a little over three years after the crash happened -- Rhone was sentenced to 11 years in prison in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Court records show her sentence will be served at 85% and she will serve a two-year term of mandatory supervised release. Rhone will also receive credit for 1,108 days -- which translates to about three years -- of time served while she was awaiting trial.
