Speeding Vehicles in Aurora Neighborhood Cause Concern
An Aurora family is safe following an incident where a stolen SUV crashed into their home on Wednesday. Witnesses in the neighborhood report that reckless driving has become a major issue along the residential part of Peoria Street in Aurora. The Aurora Police Department responded to the accident at around 11 a.m. A white SUV, suspected to be a Jeep Grand Cherokee, skidded out of control while traveling northbound on Peoria Street and collided with a house near the intersection of Peoria Street and East Alaska Place. Authorities confirmed the Jeep was reported stolen in Aurora and two males seen in the vehicle escaped and are still at large. As a result of the crash, southbound Peoria Street had to be completely closed for approximately two-and-a-half hours due to debris on the road. Thankfully, no one was inside the house at the time, and there were no reported injuries. The homeowner, Daniel Gelamichael, expressed relief that no one was in the garage when the SUV crashed into it, causing significant damage. Gelamichael also mentioned that this was the second time in three months that a vehicle had caused damage to his property. He emphasized ongoing concerns about speeding in the area, especially along Peoria Street, noting that other nearby houses have been hit by speeding cars as well. Gelamichael is urging the city to take measures such as speed monitoring and installing physical barriers to address the issue and enhance safety for residents in the neighborhood. He emphasized that without enforcement, drivers will continue to treat the street like a highway. Gelamichael is calling for community support to push for action from local authorities. Those with information regarding the stolen SUV or the individuals involved are encouraged to contact the Aurora Police Department.
