SMU invites quadriplegic North Texas teen before the anniversary of pool accident with a wasp
Semyon "SJ" Williams Jr., a 14-year-old, recently had a unique opportunity that he and his mother, Anya Camper, never expected: visiting a college campus. Williams, who previously had not thought about college, toured the football facilities at Southern Methodist University in Dallas accompanied by close family members. This visit occurred just before the anniversary of a life-changing event on June 20, 2024, when Williams became quadriplegic after a pool accident in Frisco. He is the inaugural mentee for Team Impact at SMU football, a program that partners children with serious illnesses and disabilities with college athletes. Despite the challenges he has faced due to his accident, Williams has regained some upper-body movement and recently graduated from middle school, with plans to start high school in Frisco. His family has invested in therapy and adaptive equipment to assist him in gaining independence, including technology that responds to his chin and mouth movements for mobility and schoolwork. Williams's mother remains hopeful for his future, and SMU athletes like Ty Hawkins and Wade McSparron have provided encouragement and support during his visit.
