Slick road conditions cause multiple crashes on I-71 in Sycamore Township; 1 person hospitalized

Sycamore Township officials say that they responded to multiple crashes on Interstate 71 throughout Sunday morning. This comes after officials said that slick road conditions on a segment of the highway presented significant hazards for drivers. In a post on Facebook, Sycamore Township Professional Firefighters Local 3907, which is the union that represents the township's firefighters, said that the Sycamore Township Fire Department responded to the scene on the northbound lanes of I-71 at the 18.3 mile marker. The union described the scene as a "12 vehicle auto accident involving a semi."In an image posted by the union, a semitruck could be seen to have come to a rest among multiple trees in a wooded area located past the right-hand shoulder of the interstate. Another image depicted two of the department's firetrucks blocking off traffic on the highway as they responded to the scene. The Sycamore Township Fire Department later confirmed that firefighters were initially dispatched to the scene at 9:19 a.m. due to multiple people spinning out from icy road conditions on that segment of the highway throughout the morning.Despite this, only one person was reported to have been hospitalized as a result of the crashes. It was not immediately clear how many crashes occurred as a result of the road conditions, or how many of those crashes involved multiple vehicles.Further north on the interstate, another crash was also reported on I-71 near Lebanon after a semitruck veered off the side of the road and crashed into a disabled box truck just hours before. The 64-year-old driver of the semitruck was hospitalized with injuries in the crash.
