Several transported after school bus crashes into creek in Sumner County
SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A school bus with students on board crashed and rolled into a creek Monday afternoon in Sumner County, officials said. According to the Sumner County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Rock House Hollow Road. Although the crash occurred near Bethpage Elementary School, officials said students from various schools were on the bus. In a statement sent to News 2, a spokesperson for Sumner County Schools said 19 students were on the bus when the crash occurred. A 6 p.m. update from the Tennessee Highway Patrol said that the driver lost control of the bus, which then struck a bridge before continuing over the bridge and landing in the creek. Lieutenant Bill Miller with the THP said in a video that five students and the driver sustained "minor to moderate" injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Miller added that investigators were on the scene to determine if there were any mechanical failures that could have contributed to the crash. The THP preliminary crash report said that charges could be filed pending an investigation into the crash. Joshua Lening, a Westmoreland Middle School student, stayed on scene to help his classmates following the crash. "I didn't know what to do. I was asleep. I hit my head really hard and once I opened my eyes, I had two phones in my hands and AirPods in and everything," Lening said. "I didn't know what to do ... Blood was flying everywhere. My backpack was hung ... and I couldn't get it out."
