Serious injury crash on I-64 in Newport News leaves SSS employee hurt
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- A crash took place Saturday afternoon on Interstate 64 westbound at Exit 256A in Newport News that left an employee seriously injured and a driver being charged. At 3:31 p.m., a Virginia State Trooper was on scene with a disabled vehicle. A Safety Service Patrol (SSP) vehicle had arrived on scene to set up cones and assist. While the SSP employee was at the back of his vehicle retrieving the cones when a black sedan struck him. The trooper rendered aid to the employee. The employee had serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The driver of the sedan, Courtney G. Gibson, 42, was charged with reckless driving and failure to wear a seatbelt. The crash remains under investigation.
