Sentencing set for Minneapolis crash where 5 young women died
On Thursday morning, justice was served for several Minnesota families as 32-year-old Derrick Thompson was found guilty last month in the tragic deaths of five young women from a high-speed crash in Minneapolis two summers ago. The victims, Sahra Gesaade, Salma Abdikadir, Sabiriin Ali, Sagal Hersi, and Siham Odhowa, were killed while on their way to a friend's wedding. Thompson was convicted of five counts of third-degree murder and 10 counts of criminal vehicular homicide for driving recklessly at speeds exceeding 100 mph on Interstate 35W. The sentencing hearing for Thompson began at 10 a.m. in Hennepin County, where many of the victims' families were present during the trial. Hennepin County Attorney, Mary Moriarty, expressed the intention to seek a lengthy sentence to prevent Thompson from causing harm again. While Thompson's defense tried to shift blame to his brother, the jury found him responsible. WCCO will provide updates on the case both on air and online.
