Sentence in DUI case is unconventional: Judge urges defendant to 'achieve something.'
A judge in Nevada has given Samantha Rapozo a unique sentence for her involvement in a deadly car accident in December 2019 that resulted in the death of her friend and injuries to others. She was driving under the influence of marijuana when her car collided with a pickup truck, resulting in the fatality and injuries. Rapozo expressed remorse during her sentencing hearing, where her attorney mentioned her deteriorating health conditions, including damage to her frontal lobe. Despite the delay in the legal proceedings that began in 2019, Rapozo accepted a plea deal in 2024. The judge decided against prison time and instead ordered probation, requiring Rapozo to write apology letters to the victims, create a video about the impact of her actions, and engage in speaking engagements to educate others about the consequences of impaired driving. She also surrendered her medical marijuana card, must pay restitution, and adhere to a 7 p.m. curfew while on probation.
