Semi-truck driver charged in fatal crash on Florida Turnpike caught speaking English on new video

The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) have shared video footage from a traffic stop involving Harjinder Singh, the semi-truck driver now facing charges related to a fatal crash on Florida’s Turnpike. The body camera recording revealed Singh conversing with the officer in English without any language barrier. Police Chief Troy Weisler clarified that an English language proficiency (ELP) test was not necessary during the stop as communication between Singh and the officer was smooth. Weisler emphasized that ELP assessments are only mandated when there is a communication difficulty, emphasizing that this was not the case during the stop. Following recent discussions regarding Singh's English proficiency, Weisler defended his department's adherence to the new federal guidelines, which do not mandate standardized testing procedures. He added, “The tragic incident in Florida underscores the significance of these regulations,” expressing condolences to the affected families and communities. Singh is currently in custody in St. Lucie County, facing charges including vehicular homicide and manslaughter.
