See it: Video captures deadly car accident in Harlem
HARLEM, N.Y. — It took seconds, but left behind devastation that will last forever. This surveillance video obtained by PIX11 News shows the driver of an SUV ripping through 125th Street in Harlem, just before 8 p.m. Thursday, recklessly speeding and plowing straight into cars and people. Two delivery workers on bikes never had a chance. A 28-year old died, and a 33-year-old is fighting for his life. "We heard one has already passed away. What is his family going to do? He’s trying to make a living out here and lost his life," an eyewitness said. “He passed through us, we all heard the impact...it was sad.” Sources tell PIX11 that the driver appeared to be impaired. Before the crash, he was seen speeding and swerving out of control. People are seen in the video running and falling to the ground in fear. “People were working, and leaving jobs and going home, and he's going this speed. I have never seen such a fast car," said the eyewitness. “He should be punished because he took innocent people’s life” The driver is in police custody. He's 49 years old and faces serious charges. As police continue to take a closer look at this, the community here is shaken, questioning how this could have happened on a street designed to slow drivers down with several lights and stop signs.
