Safety concerns following deadly Westerlo accident
A fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Routes 401 and 404 in Westerlo, N.Y. The owner of Sperry’s Auto Repair was the first responder, with the local fire company and Sheriffs arriving quickly. The DEC was on-site the next day cleaning up a spill from the tractor-trailer involved. Fortunately, the spill did not threaten Basic Creek or public health. Westerlo Town Supervisor Matthew Kryzak mentioned that drivers often miss stop signs due to high speeds and obstructed views. The town has discussed implementing measures like traffic lights, rumble strips, and painted roadways to improve safety. Suggestions for a blinking light have been supported by locals and officials, including Sheriff Craig Apple. However, action must come from Albany County as the roads are under their jurisdiction. Albany County officials stated that no traffic study discussions have taken place yet.
