Roanoke man given jail term for deadly drunk driving incident

A Roanoke resident has been given a 10-year prison sentence for a drunk driving crash that resulted in a person's death. Jeffrey Lynn Meche, 65, received this sentence for a vehicular homicide conviction. Half of the sentence was suspended by Judge Steve Gunnell from the 31st Judicial District, but the first three years must be served without probation, parole, or suspension of sentence as mandated by state law. The fatal crash occurred in September 2023, resulting in the tragic death of Chelsey Benoit, 29, who was driving on La. 26 when she was hit by Meche's vehicle, leading to her passing at the hospital. This case was investigated by the Louisiana State Police and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Burleigh Doga. Along with the prison time, Meche was directed to complete a substance abuse program and a driver improvement course upon his release.
