Richmond police officer injured after five-vehicle crash on I-64 in Henrico

(WRIC) — A Richmond police officer and some drivers were injured after a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 that caused major delays on Henrico roads heading into Richmond on Friday afternoon. According to the Virginia State Police, the incident happened on the westbound I-64 near the Mechanicsville Turnpike just before the Shockoe Valley Bridge at around 2:25 p.m. on Friday, June 26. Police said a 2023 Tesla had hit the rear of a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, stopping traffic. The incident caused a chain-reaction crash involving a 2020 Ram 1500, a marked 2024 Richmond Police Department Dodge Durango and a 2006 Toyota Tacoma, authorities said. The Richmond police officer was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The other drivers involved in the crash were also taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The west left shoulder, the left lane and the center lanes were initially closed Friday afternoon after the incident. There was a roughly 4-mile-long backup. All lanes have since reopened and traffic has cleared as of reporting. Further information was not immediately available. Police continue to investigate the crash.
