Requests for assistance from GDOT made by Burke County after fatal crashes.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office has formally asked the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to conduct a safety study of the Highway 25 South and Coleman Young Road intersection following a recent fatal crash and an analysis of five years of crash data. Over the past five years, there have been seven crashes at this intersection, resulting in three fatalities and two serious injuries. Sheriff Alfonzo Williams emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of residents and visitors using this route and hopes that collaborating with GDOT will lead to improved safety measures to prevent future tragedies. The Sheriff’s Office plans to work with GDOT and other stakeholders to explore potential safety enhancements, such as upgraded signage, lighting, or intersection modifications, to reduce the chances of severe accidents.
