Report shows pilot dodged turtle on runway shortly before deadly Triad plane crash
New details have emerged following a tragic plane crash in the Piedmont Triad area, as per a report from the National Transportation Safety Board. The incident occurred on June 3, around 11:45 a.m., involving a Universal Stinson 108 aircraft that was destroyed near Farmington, N.C. Sadly, both the pilot and one passenger lost their lives, with another passenger sustaining serious injuries. The plane had taken off from Sugar Valley Airport in Mocksville, and as it flew in the traffic pattern, an UNICOM operator at the airport office alerted the pilot about a turtle on the runway. The report reveals that the pilot attempted to avoid the turtle by landing further down the runway and lifting the wheel, which was noted by the operator and a man cutting grass on site. After the plane took off again, witnesses observed the wings rocking back and forth before it crashed into trees. The NTSB is anticipated to release its final report in 2026.
