Report finds pilot confusion in Air India crash due to engine switch maneuver
Indian accident investigators recently released a report on a tragic aviation accident involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner flying from Ahmedabad to London. The report by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau highlights concerns about the positioning of the critical engine fuel cutoff switches. Soon after takeoff, the aircraft experienced a loss of thrust, causing it to descend. The investigation revealed that the backup energy source activated, indicating engine power loss. The cockpit voice recorder captured a conversation between the pilots about fuel being cut off, with the captain and first officer discussing the issue. Pilot details were provided, including the experience levels of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder. Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu emphasized the importance of waiting for the final report before drawing conclusions. The incident poses a challenge for Tata Group's efforts to enhance Air India's reputation after acquiring the carrier in 2022. Air India acknowledged the report and is cooperating with authorities while refraining from further comment.
