Public forum seeks to enhance safety on Ybor City’s 7th Avenue after November fatal crash.
The City of Tampa, along with the city council and the Tampa Police Department, held a gathering in Ybor City to discuss the future of 7th Avenue. The meeting aimed to gather input on proposed enhancements to increase safety and reduce accidents on and around the roadways as part of the city's Vision Zero initiative. Several changes were suggested, including adding more parking, implementing stricter speed limits, replacing asphalt with bricks to slow down drivers, and enhancing police enforcement. Major Les Richardson from the Tampa Police Department also mentioned the use of drones for faster on-scene response. Over the past five years, nearly 350 people have lost their lives in accidents in the City of Tampa, including drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. A significant focus of the discussion was a tragic accident near Bradley's restaurant and bar that resulted in four fatalities and multiple injuries last November. The transition from asphalt to bricks in the area is expected to commence in the next 90-120 days as the first step in improving safety.
