Preventing deer hunting accidents with MSU Extension

In Jackson, Mississippi, the Mississippi State University (MSU) Extension Service is urging deer hunters to stay safe while out hunting. Although the archery season for deer hunting in 2025 is already happening, the gun portion of the season is about to begin. The MSU Extension Service points out that tree stand accidents are the most common hunting mishaps. Even though safety harnesses are not mandatory on private lands, it’s wise to prioritize safety. Before using an elevated blind or shooting house, it's important to inspect it as weather wear can affect its structure. Officials emphasize the wearing of hunter orange and being vigilant about targets, surroundings, and firearm safety. Carrying a small first aid kit with essentials such as a tourniquet and gloves is recommended, especially in a state with cases of Chronic Wasting Disease. This prion disease, also known as zombie deer disease, poses risks to deer populations. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks advises hunters to submit deer for testing at designated locations to monitor the disease.
