Pope offers prayers for Spain train accident victims

Pope Leo XIV, through a telegram released on January 19 and drafted in Spanish by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, extended prayers and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of a tragic train collision in southern Spain on January 18, 2026. The incident, which resulted in at least 39 fatalities and numerous injuries, deeply saddened the Pope. He expressed deep concern for the injured and urged the rescue teams to continue their efforts in providing relief and aid. The Pope also offered the Apostolic Blessing, invoking the intercession of Our Lady of the Pillar as a symbol of hope in the Risen Lord. The train collision occurred in Adamuz, southern Spain, where carriages from two trains derailed and collided. Spanish authorities reported that 400 passengers and staff were onboard the trains at the time of the accident. Emergency services have treated 122 individuals, with 48 still hospitalized, as the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
