Police sergeant from Randolph dies following MBTA train incident

The Randolph Police Department in Massachusetts is expressing their condolences following the tragic death of a sergeant, Sgt. Scott Sherman, who was struck and killed by an MBTA commuter train in Abington while off duty on Sunday night. The MBTA confirmed that there were no issues with the train, and the crossing signal was functioning properly at the time of the incident. Sgt. Sherman, a 23-year veteran of the Randolph Police Department who joined in 2002 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2022, served in roles such as School Resource Officer and Elder Affairs Officer. Prior to joining the department, he was involved in programs at the Randolph Intergenerational Community Center. State and local authorities are conducting an investigation into the matter. Randolph Police Chief Anthony Marag described Sgt. Sherman as a witty, intelligent, and respected individual known for his compassion, professionalism, and dedication to public service.
