Police recommend road safety following 3 consecutive fatal accidents in NE Portland

An inquiry is currently ongoing following a series of tragic incidents that occurred consecutively in Northeast Portland on Wednesday night. Portland Police Bureau has issued a warning to the community to exercise caution while navigating the dimly lit streets, particularly with the approaching Halloween weekend. With increased foliage obstructing visibility on the roads and daylight hours decreasing, PPB Traffic Division Sergeant Betsy Hornstein stressed the importance of drivers being extra vigilant. She emphasized that individuals are sometimes difficult to spot, especially children who may be moving swiftly while engaged in Halloween activities. First responders were called to the scene at Northeast Glisan Street and Northeast 111th Avenue at 6:21 p.m. where a cyclist tragically lost their life in a collision with a vehicle. Subsequently, within a short timeframe, two more incidents occurred: one at Northeast 102nd and Northeast Holladay Street resulting in a female pedestrian fatality, and the other at Northeast Glisan Street and Northeast 122nd Avenue where a male pedestrian was struck by a car, succumbed to injuries at the hospital. All drivers involved in the accidents remained present at the scene, according to authorities. While the Hazelwood Neighborhood witnessed all three crashes, the police have yet to confirm if alcohol played a role or if any charges related to traffic violations will be brought against the drivers. Additional details may emerge as the investigations progress. As a safety measure for Halloween, law enforcement suggested donning bright yellow safety vests over costumes during trick-or-treating. Pedestrians are advised to use designated crosswalks when the signal is active and ensure vehicles have come to a halt before crossing roads. Drivers are urged to adhere to traffic regulations, respect traffic signals, and arrange for alternative transportation such as ridesharing or walking if consuming alcohol or other substances that impede driving abilities.
