Police officer jailed pending trial over fatal crash outside Parliament

A 43-year-old police officer was sent to pretrial detention on Tuesday after testifying over a fatal accident outside the Greek Parliament in central Athens last week. The officer was charged with dangerous driving leading to death and negligent homicide. The crash occurred on March 12, when the officer, riding his service motorcycle, ran a red light, drove into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a 63-year-old motorcyclist, according to footage from a traffic camera from the area. Both men were injured and taken to hospitals in the greater Athens area. The 63-year-old died at Evangelismos hospital on the same day. In a statement, the victim’s family described the driver’s behavior as "extreme criminal road conduct" and called for full investigation into the circumstances of the crash and for justice to be served.
