Police officer accused of homicide for fatal crash after high-speed pursuit

A police sergeant in College Park is facing serious charges after allegedly being involved in a high-speed chase on Interstate 285 that resulted in a fatal crash. Sgt. Donnie Smith has been accused of several felonies, including reckless driving, failure to report an accident, and hit-and-run resulting in death. The incident occurred on August 17, 2025, near Riverdale Road in Riverdale. Smith, driving a police SUV, reportedly pursued another vehicle at speeds over 100 mph, which led to the fatal crash. The authorities claim that Smith did not act in accordance with Georgia's laws regarding emergency vehicle pursuits and failed to stop and assist the victims. The name of the other driver has not been released, and Smith's current employment status is unknown. College Park officials have referred all inquiries to the district attorney's office, acknowledging that this is an ongoing legal matter.
