Police link deadly Stonington bank robbery to I-95 motorcycle crash
A motorcycle crash that tragically resulted in a fatality on Wednesday in Stonington has been linked to a bank robbery that occurred just minutes before, as confirmed by the police. The robbery took place around 11:20 a.m. at the Chelsea Groton Savings Bank in Pawcatuck, a part of Stonington. The suspect reportedly entered the bank, hinted at having a weapon, and absconded with an undisclosed sum of money. Witnesses observed the suspect leaving on a blue motorcycle heading northbound. Soon after, at approximately 11:33 a.m., state police were called to a deadly motorcycle accident on I-95 Southbound near Exit 91 in Stonington. In the collision involving a blue motorcycle and a tractor-trailer, the motorcyclist, identified as 52-year-old Shawn Twomey from New Haven, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident led to the closure of I-95, causing traffic congestion on both the highway and alternate routes. Stonington police and state police have confirmed the deceased motorcyclist's connection to the morning's bank robbery. The FBI is assisting the local authorities in the investigation of the robbery. Individuals who witnessed either the bank robbery or the subsequent crash are encouraged to reach out to Stonington police or contact Trooper Timothy Wengloski at Troop E-Montville.
