Police investigate fatal motorcycle crash on US-311 ramp to I-40 West
A 71-year-old motorcyclist died after a single-vehicle crash Saturday morning on the US-311 ramp to Interstate 40 westbound, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department. Police said officers were called to the crash at 11:20 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the US-311 ramp to I-40 W. When officers arrived, they found a motorcycle that had been involved in an apparent collision with a guardrail. The rider, Thomas William Kelly, was found near the crash site with life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local medical facility for treatment, police said. On Monday, June 22, 2026, police said they were notified that Kelly died from injuries related to the crash. Preliminary findings indicate Kelly was traveling northbound on US-311 and using the I-40 westbound access ramp when, for reasons unknown, the motorcycle left the roadway to the right and hit the guardrail, police said. The Winston-Salem Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit has taken over the investigation. Police said a next of kin has been notified. Anyone with information is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police Department non-emergency number at 336-773-7700.
