Police: Driver in fatal Fair Oaks pedestrian crash was using cell phone

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- Police have charged a 20-year-old woman after a fatal hit-and-run near Fair Oaks in December 2025. The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said on Dec. 23, 2025, a car hit 50-year-old Jimmy Patterson on Fairfax County Parkway near Old Plains Road. First responders pronounced Patterson dead at the scene. During the investigation, detectives determined that the driver, later identified as Shaza Edris of Fairfax, was using her cell phone when she hit Patterson. Edris turned herself in on June 25, 2026. FCPD charged her with felony hit and run involving death and using a handheld personal communications device while driving. She was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
