Police chase in Brookfield ends with arrest after stolen Wauwatosa squad car crash
A dramatic police chase involving a stolen squad car ended in Brookfield on Tuesday morning with the suspect's arrest after a crash, leaving four officers injured.Witness cell phone video shows the tail end of the pursuit as the man who crashed in a stolen Wauwatosa police car is seen running across a lawn and being tackled at Tru Lane and North Avenue just after 10:30 a.m."We were upstairs in our offices, which are all windows on the corner here, and we saw all the cop cars, like thirty plus cop cars going that way, and about a minute later they turned around, and we quickly saw the two collide right out here," witness Mia Geiger said.Wauwatosa Police say they'd just pulled over the man's white minivan, related to a domestic violence case and pursuit in Oak Creek, and a retail theft and pursuit in Brown Deer early Tuesday morning. News Chopper 12 spotted a pursuit involving the same white minivan around 6:15 a.m. on Milwaukee's northwest side, but police eventually turned off their lights, and the vehicle was never pulled over.Police later pinned the suspect vehicle on 116th Street in Wauwatosa, but he managed to break away and jump into one of the running squad cars, backing into several officers before crashing about 20 blocks away. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended."It obviously ended in a crash here. Details are still being resolved. But there's no ongoing threat to the community," said Wauwatosa Police Lt. Cory Wex.Witnesses described the chaotic scene, noting how an officer risked his safety to stop the stolen squad car with his own unmarked vehicle as other officers arrived."Yeah, he was actually turning around at this U-Turn here, and they hit while he was coming down this way, and the guy who stole the police car hopped over to the other side of the road, and that's where, unfortunately, the other civilian car got hit. Then he hopped out and started running, and the police officer got him and brought him down to the ground," said witness Michelle Cochran.Four officers were hurt during the incident, either from the crash or when the suspect stole the squad car, backing into several officers and possibly dragging others. The police chief confirmed that none of the injuries are serious, although several officers are still receiving treatment at the hospital. The 26-year-old suspect remains in custody. He has not yet been named by police.
