Pilot in North Carolina crash swerved to avoid turtle, NTSB reports

According to a recent preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board, a small plane crashed near Sugar Valley Airport in North Carolina after the pilot raised a wheel to avoid hitting a turtle on the runway. The crash, which resulted in the tragic deaths of the pilot and a passenger, occurred on June 3. Another passenger sustained serious injuries in the incident. Reports indicate that after being alerted by a communications operator about the turtle on the runway, the pilot landed and lifted the right main wheel to avoid it. Tragically, the plane then crashed and caught fire in a wooded area near the runway. Final reports, which will provide more insights into the crash, may take up to one to two years to complete.
