Pilot from Miami dies in plane crash trying to circumnavigate globe, officials report
An accomplished Miami pilot, Anh-Thu Nguyen, tragically lost her life in a plane crash in Indiana. She was known for being only the 10th woman to fly solo around the world last year and had founded a flight school in Pembroke Pines. The 44-year-old was flying the aircraft when it crashed near Indianapolis, narrowly missing a gas station. Witnesses described seeing the plane lose control and dive into the ground, where unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done to save Nguyen. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation into the crash. Colleagues and friends expressed deep sadness at the loss of Nguyen, recalling her dedication to aviation and breaking barriers for women in the field. Born in Vietnam, Nguyen had expressed her passion for flying and inspiring future female pilots. She had an extensive history in aviation and had achieved significant milestones in her career, including her solo flight around the world. Colleagues described her as a mentor and advocate for diversity in aerospace and aviation. The organization she founded, Asian Women in Aerospace and Aviation, paid tribute to her and encouraged donations in her name to continue supporting young girls in pursuing their dreams in the field.
