Pilot error blamed for fatal Warbird crash at EAA AirVenture 2023 that claimed life of Bruce Collie’s daughter
The National Transportation Safety Board has issued its final findings on the tragic Warbird crash during EAA AirVenture 2023 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The report points to pilot error as the primary cause of the accident, which claimed the lives of Super Bowl champion Bruce Collie's daughter and her companion. The NTSB report revealed that the pilot and passenger took off in their North American AT-6D aircraft, serial number N49961, at 8:57 a.m. on July 29, 2023, ascending to 3,900 feet before turning towards Lake Winnebago. Despite initially leveling off, data indicated that the aircraft slowed down during a series of turns, leading to a stall and subsequent rapid descent. Witnesses observed the plane enter a flat spin to the right until it crashed into the lake, breaking apart upon impact and tragically killing the occupants. Despite a thorough examination, no mechanical issues were found with the plane that could have contributed to the crash. Ultimately, the NTSB determined that the accident was caused by the pilot's failure to maintain proper airspeed while maneuvering, resulting in an aerodynamic stall that led to the tragedy.
