Pilot dies in NC plane crash after trying to avoid turtle, NTSB reports

A small plane crashed near a North Carolina airport this month after the pilot tried to avoid hitting a turtle on the runway by lifting a wheel after landing, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board. Tragically, the pilot and a passenger died in the June 3 incident near Sugar Valley Airport in Mocksville, with a second passenger sustaining serious injuries. An airport communications operator alerted the pilot about the turtle, prompting the unusual maneuver. The pilot lifted the right wheel, but the plane ultimately crashed and caught fire in a forested area, leaving it severely damaged. The NTSB is currently conducting an investigation, with the final report likely to take one to two years to be completed.
