Pilot admits guilt in Sevier County crash that killed in December 2021
In Sevier County, Tennessee, a man has admitted to criminally negligent homicide following a fatal helicopter accident in 2021. The plea agreement, dated November 12, did not specify the sentence, leaving it to be determined by the court. Matthew Jones was piloting the helicopter on December 29, 2021, when it crashed near the Sevier-Cocke County line, resulting in the death of a passenger and serious injuries to Jones. Despite warnings from airport staff about adverse weather conditions that day, Jones took off from Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge Airport, only to disappear from radar eight minutes later. Records indicate that Jones had previously misled individuals in incidents leading up to the crash.
