Parents sue over suburban crash that killed teen

Nearly a year after a tragic accident that claimed the life of 18-year-old Courtney Miller in suburban Mokena, her parents are seeking answers through a pair of lawsuits. The fatal crash occurred at the junction of Route 30 and Owens Road on August 15th, 2024, where Courtney, a passenger in a speeding vehicle, was struck by another car making a left turn driven by Scott Hersted of Mokena. Despite a year passing, the Mokena police have not filed any charges regarding the incident. Seeking accountability, Courtney's parents have filed lawsuits against Hersted and two Chicago establishments, alleging that alcohol served to Hersted shortly before the accident led to his intoxication. Additional legal action was taken against the Village of Mokena, criticizing the police's handling of the situation and raising concerns that Hersted received preferential treatment due to his wife's prior connection to local government. Courtney's parents emphasize their pursuit for justice and closure, lamenting the lack of information and investigative progress regarding their daughter’s tragic passing.
