Parents in South Florida advocate for safer waters after their teenager died in a boating accident in 2022.

As Florida's residents prepare for one of the busiest boating weekends of the year, the parents of Lucy Fernandez, a 17-year-old girl who tragically lost her life in a boating accident in 2022, are advocating for safer waters. Melissa Fernandez, Lucy's mother, described her daughter as a bright and joyful individual. Lucy passed away during Labor Day weekend in a boat crash near Boca Chita Key, causing injuries to ten others, including Katy Puig, who suffered permanent disability. In response, the Fernandez family, alongside other affected families, commemorated the enactment of "Lucy's Law," which imposes harsher penalties on boaters involved in serious accidents. Under this law, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injuries is now a second-degree felony, escalating to a first-degree felony if a fatality occurs. Moreover, the legislation aligns penalties for boating under the influence with those for driving under the influence. Additionally, boaters providing false crash information may face a second-degree misdemeanor charge. Boating fatalities in Florida spiked by 37% in 2024, with 81 reported deaths, as per the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. While acknowledging that the law is a step forward, the Fernandez family emphasizes the continued importance of boater vigilance and preparedness. They stress the significance of understanding boating risks and being educated about safety measures. The individual operating the boat during the crash, George Pino, is facing a vessel homicide charge and has pleaded not guilty, with the legal process ongoing. Pledges from Miami-Dade and City of Miami mayors to enhance boater safety measures have been made, including the declaration of July 2 as Lucy Fernandez Day in the City of Miami. The Fernandez family finds strength in honoring Lucy's memory through advocacy, viewing it as a way to create positive change in the recreational activity she cherished. They are committed to furthering their efforts by advocating for improved boating safety regulations at both the state and local levels.
