Orange County man dies in crash while teaching his daughter how to drive

A man died on Monday while teaching his daughter how to drive after their car careened off an embankment next to an Orange County parking lot, according to the Laguna Beach Police Department. The crash happened a little after 4:10 p.m. along Coast Highway near a closed grocery store in Laguna Beach. Police said the pair's car drove through a barrier and fell roughly 40 feet down a steep embankment. The car, a Volkswagen convertible, flipped onto its roof and came to a rest on a sidewalk below. Police said the 15-year-old girl had a permit and was being taught to drive by her 64-year-old father. While investigating the matter, they say that they suspect a pedal mixup may have been a factor."It appeared to be on a permitted driver ... with her father out essentially in a driving lesson sort of situation," said LBPD Lt. Jesse Schmidt. "Gas pedal-brake pedal confusion and tumbled over a 40-foot cliff onto Coast Highway."The man died at the scene. The teenager emerged from the wreck with significant injuries and on Tuesday was said to be in stable condition after paramedics rushed her to a Mission Viejo hospital.Police closed Coast Highway for several hours after the crash, but it has since reopened. The girl's mother told police that the area is close to their home and was the typical route where she drove during lessons.
