One killed during snowmobile accident in western Iowa

SHELBY COUNTY, Iowa -- Authorities say one person was killed during a snowmobile accident early Sunday morning. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says around 12:15 a.m. Sunday, the Communications Center received a report of a snowmobile accident along Highway 191, south of Portsmouth. The sheriff's office, along with Shelby County Ambulance Service and Portsmouth Fire & Rescue, arrived on scene and located a snowmobile and rider submerged in a creek. Authorities say first responders removed the rider from the water, where he was pronounced deceased. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office has identified the rider as 64-year-old Scott Gau, of Portsmouth. Officials say Gau has been transported to the State Medical Examiners Office, in Ankeny, where an autopsy will be conducted.
