Officials report three fatalities in US-131 head-on crash
A tragic wrong-way car crash on US-131 near Wayland in Martin Township resulted in the deaths of multiple individuals early Sunday morning. A female driver of the wrong-way vehicle and a male driver with a male front seat passenger in the other car succumbed to their injuries at the scene, as reported by the Allegan County Sheriff's Office. Additionally, at least three other passengers sustained life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment. Responding officers were alerted to the wrong-way driver by reports of the vehicle southbound in the northbound lane of US-131 from 129th Avenue in Wayland Township. Despite attempts by law enforcement to intercept the vehicle, a collision occurred near mile marker 57. There is currently uncertainty regarding the involvement of alcohol in the crash, according to deputies. While US-131 was temporarily closed following the incident, the roadway has since been reopened.
