Officer killed after stopping at crash scene in San Diego
A tragic incident occurred late Monday night on a San Diego highway leading to the deaths of a police officer and another motorist. The initial crash unfolded around 10:30 p.m. on I-8, as a vehicle collided with another and overturned, followed by a third vehicle striking the overturned one. La Mesa police officer Lauren Craven, who was returning from the San Diego Central Jail, stopped to assist at the scene but was ultimately struck by a fourth vehicle along with the overturned vehicle's driver, resulting in both of their deaths. The 19-year-old driver of the overturned car has not been publicly identified yet. The California Highway Patrol Captain shared condolences and pointed out that three out of the four other victims involved in the crash have been treated and released, with one still hospitalized as of Tuesday while authorities look into the potential involvement of drugs or alcohol in the collision.
