Officer charged with leading chase that resulted in deadly accident
An officer, Alexander Rodriguez, from the Anne Arundel County police department has been charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses following a tragic crash that occurred last year. The charges include manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, and misconduct in office, as announced by the Maryland attorney general's office. The incident involved an unauthorized police pursuit that resulted in a fatal crash in Howard County, leading to the death of Joshua VanderZiel, a 21-year-old U.S. Navy linguist. Rodriguez, driving a marked police cruiser, engaged in a high-speed pursuit but did not notify anyone, render aid, or report the incident. The legal proceedings stemmed from an extensive investigation based on witness statements, GPS data, and surveillance footage. Despite being employed since 2023, Rodriguez's police powers were suspended without pay while the case unfolds. The Anne Arundel County Police Department stated that Rodriguez's alleged actions are not representative of the department's values and that they are cooperating with authorities in this matter.
