Off-duty firefighters help rescue 3 passengers after car plunges into water at Gloucester, Mass., park
Three passengers were rescued after a car plunged into the water at a park in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the city's fire department said Sunday. The car went into the water at St. Peter's Park just before 11 a.m. Sunday. Two off-duty Gloucester firefighters were on a boat nearby and witnessed the crash. The firefighters, Deputy Chief Andrew McRobb and Lt. William Doucette, called the crash in and ended up rescuing the trio of occupants, along with help from fishermen and bystanders who were nearby, Gloucester fire said. All three occupants were safely rescued from the car, which landed on its roof in the water."Fortunately, it was low tide and not high tide,” said Gloucester Deputy Chief Tom LoGrande. According to a police investigation, the car drove around barriers and over the seawall before plunging nearly 20 feet into the water. The passengers, who were alert and conscious when they were removed from the water, were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Doucette was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The car was removed from the water by a local tow company.
