Off-duty deputy and companion killed in early-morning freeway crash

A tragic incident occurred on the 101 Freeway in North Hollywood early Tuesday morning, as an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, Marcos Pena Jr., lost his life in a fatal traffic collision. Deputy Pena, 31, and a female companion were struck by a vehicle while standing outside his car around 2:20 a.m., resulting in their untimely deaths. The Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol are investigating the details of the accident, which caused significant traffic delays. Sheriff Robert G. Luna expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Deputy Pena Jr. and extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Deputy Pena had joined the department in July 2022 and worked at Men’s Central Jail. He is survived by his mother, Michelle Rubio, stepfather Deputy Albert Rubio, and four stepsiblings. The community mourns the loss of Deputy Pena Jr., who left us too soon.
