Off-duty crash leads to death of St. Cloud police officer

St. Cloud Police Officer Ryan Ebert, who had served with the department for 18 years, passed away at the hospital several days after being in an off-duty car accident. The crash occurred late at night on Monday, October 13, when Officer Ebert's truck collided with a transit bus and cable barrier on Highway 77 in Apple Valley. Despite being taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, his injuries were deemed fatal. Officer Ebert passed away on the morning of Saturday, October 18, and his organs were donated. The bus driver, a 65-year-old man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation revealed that alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash, although Officer Ebert had only a small amount in his system, well below the threshold for impairment. The final conclusions of the Minnesota State Patrol's crash report are still pending.
