Off-duty crash involving alcohol gravely injures St. Cloud police officer
A police officer from St. Cloud, Minnesota, was hospitalized with injuries that were deemed fatal after his truck was involved in a collision with a bus in the Twin Cities while he was off duty in an incident involving alcohol, according to officials. The accident occurred around 9:56 p.m. on Monday on northbound Highway 77 near Interstate 35E in Apple Valley, Minnesota. The officer, Ryan Matthew Ebert, 44, a veteran of the St. Cloud Police Department for 18 years, was driving his 2024 Dodge Ram 1500 when it hit a 2018 Transit Bus and a cable barrier. The bus driver, Phillip Alan Wright, 65, from Apple Valley, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The incident involved alcohol, with medical tests showing Ebert had a very small amount of alcohol in his system that was below the level considered impairing or legally drunk. Ebert has worked as both an investigator and a patrol officer in St. Cloud. An online fundraiser for his children has raised over $25,000.
