NTSB report: Plane spun downward before North Carolina crash, killing 2

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a report after investigating an aircraft crash at a boat dealership near Harnett County. The Aviat Pitts S-2B aircraft, believed to be on a training exercise from the Raleigh Executive Jetport in Sanford, crashed resulting in the deaths of pilot Anton Vandeth and passenger Dwight Frye. The plane departed from the airport at 8:53 a.m. on June 20, making a few left turns and reaching a height of 4,100 feet before a tight 360-degree left turn and steep descent. Witnesses reported that the plane nosedived into the pavement after six minutes of flight, with the engine heard running continuously. The report also detailed the plane's post-impact condition, noting major components found at the crash site. While a post-crash fire consumed much of the frame, certain components like the steel tubular structure and flight control push/pull tube remained intact. The investigation is ongoing, with some aircraft parts retained for further analysis.
