NTSB releases initial findings on fatal Rockland school bus accident
The NTSB has issued its initial findings on the tragic school bus accident in Maine that claimed the life of Brayden Callahan, a 12-year-old student, two months ago. The incident occurred in Rockland on Nov. 21, 2025, involving a Regional School Unit 13 (RSU 13) bus driven by Jeffrey Colburn. Colburn, who pled not guilty to a manslaughter charge, was recently arrested in connection to the crash. The NTSB report states that Brayden was struck and fatally injured as he exited the bus at an intersection. The report mentions that while Brayden was in a marked crosswalk, the bus began moving, hitting him and causing the tragic accident. Colburn admitted to not seeing Brayden, and investigations revealed that safety measures like the crossing arm were not activated at the time. The victim's family has filed a lawsuit seeking $10 million in damages against Colburn and RSU 13, citing safety oversights. Colburn, who is no longer employed by RSU 13, is currently in custody at the Two Bridges Regional Jail with bail set at $2,000. Restrictions have been placed on Colburn, including no contact with Brayden's family and a prohibition on driving commercial vehicles.
